A Year Concludes and A New Year Holds Promise-Reflection by GET, LLC

As we close the book on 2013, we would be remiss if we did not take a moment to reflect on the past year.  GET, LLC was so very privileged to be able to share with you more about our business and insight into the happenings here in the Western Pacific.  We hope you gained further understanding more about the casegood furniture business, structured cabling and energy efficiency lighting industry and aerial lifts.  Additionally, you read a different perspective into Paradise Guam-our home. We wrote about the important issues of the day-a direct reflection of the discussions of our friends and neighbors.  These blog posts were what people were talking about around water coolers, dinner tables and back kitchens all across Micronesia. All the writing in this blog reminded me of some important things-all of us should not take things for granted and knowledge is surely power.  GET, LLC is excited for what 2014 will bring.  We will continue sharing more information and exciting insight into the world around us.  Thanks for reading and may you and yours have a prosperous new year.

FF&E Services-Knowledge of Furniture Products

We continue our discussion on this blog about Furniture, Furnishings and Equipment or FF&E-this time on the specific skill sets associated with providing FF& E Services.  It is critical that those offering FF&E services must be knowledgeable about systems furniture, case goods, seating, "loose" furniture, and other specialty furniture.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Handbook of Professional Practice says that one of the keys to this is knowledge of ergonomics, furniture construction, and fabric characteristics such as durability, flammability, and applied coatings is essential to providing appropriate recommendations to the respective client. The AIA says that most product information is readily available through manufacturers’ representatives, like GET, LLC,  or through online resources like www.get-guam.com.

When evaluating furniture, architects and designers should also pay close attention to product warranties and the manufacturer’s financial viability-emerging as key in the buying process.

Local sales representatives, like us, are the best resource for pricing and follow-up information. Most vendors encourage their sales staff to call on design firms to inform them about the costs and benefits of their particular lines. These companies also will provide samples and mock-ups of their products for evaluation, often at no charge.

Many sales representatives provide “lunch-and-learn” presentations for design firms and regularly host designers on factory trips to highlight lines appropriate for a specific project.

Providing furniture procurement services also requires good knowledge of local furniture dealers, including the services they offer and the lines they carry. For example, for workstation systems projects, dealers often provide final detailed layouts and specifications to the architect’s design requirements. They also may inventory existing furniture for evaluation by the architect or coordinate installation.

The AIA says that designers and architects can sometimes find it helpful to create a partnering arrangement with local dealers and to work with different companies to fill the needs of different projects.

Form and Line-What is it?

A great piece of advice from Furniture World Magazine regarding Form and Line.  I must start by stating that they are the oldest trade publication in this industry in the United States. 20,000 furniture retailers look to them for the most up to date information on their business.  The New Rochelle, New York-based company has been doing this since 1870 and their information is timeless.

Case in point. When creating a retail space or a space for your respective customer, they say to use form and line to your advantage,

"...Form fills space and defines it. A trained eye learns to notice not only the form, but also to appreciate the void which adjoins and is defined by it. This relationship is much like the interplay between shadow and light. Forms have bulk and shape.

Rectangular forms can give a room a sense of sturdiness and certainty, but overuse can be repetitive and monotonous. Most rooms, furniture and wall decor are basically rectangles; having straight sides and right angled corners.

Angular forms are less common than rectilinear. They, therefore, attract and keep attention.

Diagonals can be used to imply motion and also increase the apparent size of an object.

Curved forms impart feelings of security, continuous change and continuity. Circles, arcs and cones have a focal point to which attention is drawn, lending emphasis to a design scheme. Sectionals, upholstered back, arm and cushion treatments, lamp shades, dining and occasional tables, vases, plates, fabric and rug designs often employ curved forms and motifs. They can be used as the basis or theme of a room design or to offset and balance angular and rectilinear forms.

Line can be used to alter the mood and proportion of a living space. Form and line are closely related. A rectangle can be tall and high or long and low, approximating vertical or horizontal lines. A low, long rectangular sofa may generate a feeling of stability and certainty resulting from its form - and also of informality and length due to its lines.

Horizontal Lines can be used to make spaces seem more relaxed and informal, and accentuate the horizontal aspect or length of walls or furnishings.

Vertical Lines, like the geometry of a Gothic cathedral, can add dignity and formality to a room. They also make objects seem taller in relation to their width.

Curved Lines evoke the same kinds of responses as curved forms. Depending on their spatial orientation, they can also incorporate properties of horizontal or vertical lines.

Diagonal Lines can create a feeling of imbalance and dynamic movement. Like curved lines, their impact changes with their horizontal or vertical aspect."

Thanks Furniture World for the advice-the 20,000 readers they have world wide probably don't say it enough.

GET, LLC is a partner with Pennsylvania-based Savoy Furniture. We thank them for what they do provide the form and line of their products that give their customers the quality and stability that continues to make them a top choice for their respective case good needs.

GET, LLC on "The Bench" with the GCA Construction Bulletin

GET, LLC is proud to announce our relationship with the Guam Contractors Association in providing information via this Blog to the "Around the Bench" Segment of the GCA's Monthly Construction Bulletin.

As a proud Associate Member of the Guam Contractors Association, GET, LLC has been really excited about contributing to the monthly publication that is read by the 535 member organization.

Many GCA members are always on the go.  Many are busy with a construction deadline or two.  Many don't have a moment to jump on getguam.blogspot.com to get our take on a host of issues from selecting casegood furniture, aerial lift news and other related matters to the goods and services we provide.

The "Around the Bench" article is our way of giving back to an organization that has been so beneficial to us as a small business, but allows us to share more about what we do for our customers.  The focus so far has been on examining trends in the lighting industry-specifically light-emitting diodes or LED.

GET, LLC debuted our contribution in the April 2013 edition of the Construction Bulletin-to the surprise of many in the community.  The May 2013 version was published recently.

We want to personally thank Sales and Marketing Director Geri Leon Guerrero of ADZtech and Publisher James Martinez for their support on this new way of linking this part of the www.get-guam.com family to the masses in print form.

Did I say it is replicated on the GCA website at www.guamcontractors.org?  Click on publications and there you go.

A Look at the U.S. Army Furniture Program-Savoy Furniture and Type A Case Good Furniture

Despite talk of Sequester and cuts all across the federal government, there is a little known program that can do much to assist the furniture used to support our war fighters and be economical at the same time.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) requested U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) support in furnishing unaccompanied personnel housing (UPH). GSA agreed that a program could be set up to meet the stringent requirements for the Army Corps and this special program.  Central to this effort was the Corps' intention to use the GSA Multiple Award Schedule Program to provide a variety of product styles and sources while ensuring the quality and performance of the furniture used in the housing.

GET, LLC, through our friends at Savoy Furniture, can provide case good support for Type A Products as graded by the USACE.

Type A or C1 construction (Veneer on Hardwood Veneer-Core Plywood) includes side panels that shall be minimum 19 mm (3/4") 5-ply hardwood veneer-core plywood with oak veneer, exposed edges on the front of the piece shall be provided with minimum 10 mm (3/8") thick solid oak edge banding or may be covered by solid oak front frame, back edges of side panels, if exposed, shall be finished for appearance, as the backs of some of these units may be exposed to view, top edges of  side panels, if exposed, shall be finished smooth, and sealed, for cleaning, bottom edges of side panels shall be sealed to eliminate the possibility of water wicking up the side panels when floors are mopped and as a minimum, side panels that will be visible, such as in wardrobes, drop-lid desks, one-drawer nightstands, etc., shall be finished on both faces to match other panels.

GSA has and continues to work with the Corps' Huntsville Center to establish a process for identifying products.  It was decided that the program could be set-up within the GSA schedule for household and quarters furniture, FSC 71. As stated on their website, GSA worked with Huntsville to establish the technical requirements for the furniture. Vendors are invited to submit information on their contract items to demonstrate compliance with the Corps' requirements and GSA reviews the product lines.

The product lines listed are submitted by vendors, including Savoy, for review against the requirements of the Department of the Army UPH Furniture Program. Specific product details related to the product design, materials, and construction are constantly reviewed. In addition to identifying the product lines, the listing provides the available construction types and pull types, as defined by the Army UPH Furniture specifications.

Favorite Wood for Casegoods-Cherry is "Cherry"

There are a number of wood species that are great for casegoods.

Many would argue that the Hawaiian Koa wood is the best for chests, dressers, bookshelves and cabinets.  Koa is colorful but is perhaps the most expensive.  What about hickory?  Grain, color, inclusions like knots, burls, figure, bird peck, worm track and other unique attributes also offer the lovers of this wood  some examples of hickory's identification.  Red Adler.  Pine.  Birch.  Take your pick of wood for your next project.

But one stands out.

Cherry.  Underrated by many.

There are those in the casegood industry that praise the wood's wide number of applications including paneling, flooring and furniture. Need a great look in your kitchen or other areas of your home or building? Cherry is the top choice for fine furniture.”

One designer/salesman of custom cabinetry shared a perspective of selecting a type of wood for your next project:  select a wood that presents the best finish. With cherry, this hardwood has attractive grain character, and stained finishes on cherry have a depth and luster not found on most other cabinetry woods.

Additionally, keep in mind choice of wood and sustainability.  This idea is not lost by our friends at Savoy Furniture.

With the rise in steel prices and the sensitivity to being “green”, Savoy Furniture believes that wood  is the smarter choice for your furniture needs. Wood is a renewable resource and requires less energy than most to process into finished products. Wood is also low in toxicity and completely biodegradable. Wood enhances thermal performance and interior acoustics while providing long-term performance and durability.

Additional advantages of wood products include: Readily Available, Strength and Rigidity Properties, Cost-Competitiveness Relative to Other Products, Long-Term Performance and Durability, Environmental Merits.

Give GET, LLC a call or drop us a line to discuss sustainable casegood furniture solutions that best fits your organization's needs.
