GET, LLC and Deco Lighting, in cooperation with the Guam Football Association (GFA) has completed the installation of energy efficient lighting of the sports federation's recently renovated futsal court at the GFA National Training Center in Harmon, Guam. The installation of 14 Deco Lighting D823-Light-Emitting Diode (LED) 23" Area Lights by GFA partner SET Pacific Inc., was part of a major retrofit of the futsal court which included the installation of a modern artificial playing surface.  

"Two great teams came together for a great cause/program at GFA," said GFA Executive Director Cheri Stewart. "This project will do much to support our National Teams and allow us to incorporate LED lighting into our expansion plans of the world class soccer facilities here."

The project was funded through the generous financial support of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).  The AFC is the governing body of Asian football and one of the six Confederations making up the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). This is the first retrofit and renovation on the futsal courts since GFA constructed the facility in 2008.

This news comes on the heels of pending fourth quarter news after a huge third quarter as demand for lighting equipment jumped 4.4% between the second and third quarters of 2015 to achieve what the National Lighting Bureau hails as “the best quarterly performance since the second quarter of 2008.”

LED Light Creators Win Nobel Prize

The driving forces behind the creation of the Light-Emitting Diode were rewarded for their vision and revolutionary work. The Nobel Prize in Physics 2014 © The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was awarded jointly to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura "for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources".

The press release from the Nobel Foundation (http:www.nobelprize.org) said it all,

"This year’s Nobel Laureates are rewarded for having invented a new energy-efficient and environment-friendly light source – the blue light-emitting diode (LED). In the spirit of Alfred Nobel the Prize rewards an invention of greatest benefit to mankind; using blue LEDs, white light can be created in a new way. With the advent of LED lamps we now have more long-lasting and more efficient alternatives to older light sources.

When Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura produced bright blue light beams from their semi-conductors in the early 1990s, they triggered a fundamental transformation of lighting technology. Red and green diodes had been around for a long time but without blue light, white lamps could not be created. Despite considerable efforts, both in the scientific community and in industry, the blue LED had remained a challenge for three decades.

They succeeded where everyone else had failed. Akasaki worked together with Amano at the University of Nagoya, while Nakamura was employed at Nichia Chemicals, a small company in Tokushima. Their inventions were revolutionary. Incandescent light bulbs lit the 20th century; the 21st century will be lit by LED lamps.

White LED lamps emit a bright white light, are long-lasting and energy-efficient. They are constantly improved, getting more efficient with higher luminous flux (measured in lumen) per unit electrical input power (measured in watt). The most recent record is just over 300 lm/W, which can be compared to 16 for regular light bulbs and close to 70 for fluorescent lamps. As about one fourth of world electricity consumption is used for lighting purposes, the LEDs contribute to saving the Earth’s resources. Materials consumption is also diminished as LEDs last up to 100,000 hours, compared to 1,000 for incandescent bulbs and 10,000 hours for fluorescent lights.

The LED lamp holds great promise for increasing the quality of life for over 1.5 billion people around the world who lack access to electricity grids: due to low power requirements it can be powered by cheap local solar power."

Not many people know that the LED Blue Light was founded in our backyard after much work and effort. The Nobel awarding committee said the trio's work is in keeping with the spirit of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the prize, because LED lights save on energy, last long and are environmentally-friendly because they don't contain mercury.

It is such a thrill that the invention of the blue LED is just twenty years old, but since has already contributed to create white light in an entirely new manner to the benefit each and every one of us.

GET,LLC and Deco Lighting Light Up Santa Rita Basketball Court

GET, LLC and Deco Lighting, in cooperation with the Municipality of Santa Rita Guam, has completed the lighting of the island village's community basketball court renovation project.  The installation of four Deco Lighting D823-LED 23" Area Lights was part of a full restoration of the basketball court to include a modern surface, fencing,  basketball post, rims and backboards and bleacher seats.  The project was funded through the generous financial support of the Municipal Planning Council of the Municipality of Santa Rita.

"This is the first time in 20 years that this court has been lighted," said Santa Rita Mayor Dale Alvarez. "This project was done to not only honor our elders but to give the youth of Santa Rita a safe place to play and grow in the game of basketball."

Mayor Alvarez also took time to honor GET, LLC for their contribution to this project including the use of the company's Genie TZ-50 Trailer Mounted Boom for the aerial work portion of the court's renovation.

$53 Billion Energy Efficient Lighting Market in 2015

Dallas, Texas-based Markets and Markets issued a report this week that the global solid state and other energy efficient lighting systems market is expected to grow from $28,248.7 million in 2010 to $53,469.5 million in 2015-reflecting an estimated Compound Annual Growth Rate of 9.7% in the five year period.  The market research company and consulting firm noted in their report titled "Solid State and Other Energy Efficient Lighting Systems, Application and Market Trends (2010-2015)" that the increasing demand for energy-saving and environment-friendly lighting technology is driving the growth of the global solid state and other energy efficient lighting systems market.

  

Of note, compact fluorescent lamps command the largest share in terms of revenues in the respective market segment, while light emitting diodes (LED) is the second largest market due to what Markets and Markets attributes to the globally increasing demand for energy efficient lighting.  LED lighting has also gained much more attention due to a shift of the focus of governments’ worldwide towards protection of the planet from global warming. While LED lighting contributed about 31.2% to the global solid state and other energy efficient lighting systems market revenues in 2010, the organic light emitting diode market is expected to grow to 44% by 2015.

GET, LLC was encouraged by the news that the U.S offers the most lucrative of markets for solid state and energy efficient lighting manufacturers as it is to grow 10.7% by next year. The Asia Pacific region-where this blogger is currently sitting-is the largest market in the world and has 44.7% share of the global market revenues. Europe comes second in revenues.

Markets and Markets says that industry participants with the most significant product developments include Philips, Osram, General Electric, Nichia, Cree and Samsung and that major players also differ from one technology to other.   The report says that Philips, Osram, and General Electric are the largest players in CFL market. Global LED lighting market= $42 billion by 2019

One of South Asia's top media companies is reporting that worldwide LED lighting markets are poised to achieve significant growth over the next six years as buildings and communities lead the way in implementing more cost efficient lighting systems. 

CyberMedia's India-based ciol,com, through their Dallas, Texas Bureau sites a report entitled, "LED Lighting: Market Shares, Strategies, and Forecasts, Worldwide, 2013 to 2019" lays out that next generation lighting achieves a complete replacement of incandescent filament bulbs with LED lighting that is more energy efficient, lasts longer and has a significantly lower cost of operation. 

The report, that hit the browsers of nearly 1.5 million people, is advocating for the use of LED lamps, which they say will lower the overall cost of lighting. The CyberMedia report says that LED lighting costs are less than costs with incandescent  lights.

GET, LLC read with interest that LED lamps offer up to 50,000 hours of illumination with a fraction of the energy used by traditional incandescent bulbs.

What does that mean?

It means that LED bulbs generate 90% less heat than incandescent bulbs and its uses will extend time between bulb replacements. Hard to argue with an report that says the energy efficient bulbs can be used to achieve a near zero-maintenance lighting system.
