Server Revenues Hit $12 Billion

Leading industry analysts are reporting that server sales for the first quarter of 2015 hit the $12 Billion mark.   Stamford, Connecticut-based Gartner Inc has reported that server revenue grew by 17.9 percent to $13.4 billion from the same period last year. In terms of server shipments, Gartner reported server shipments of 2.7 million units for a growth rate of 13 percent.

"The first quarter of 2015 was a particularly strong start to the year, with the strongest shipment growth since the third quarter of 2010, when the market was recovering from the downturn. It was also the second largest-volume quarter ever," said Gartner Research Director Adrian O'Connell.

According to the world's leading information technology research and advisory company. x86 server shipments increased 13.2 percent and revenue increased 14.5 percent, while RISC/Itanium Unix server shipments declined 2.9 percent and revenue decreased by 3.1 percent.

HP maintained its No. 1 ranking in the worldwide server market based on revenue with 23.8 percent market share in the first quarter of 2015. Lenovo experienced the largest increase in the first quarter of 2015 with 658.2 percent growth. All of the top five global vendors had revenue increases for the first quarter of 2015-including Cisco which saw a bump in market share by 1.2 percent to 6.6 percent of the 2015 Quarter One Market Share.

"The market was driven by particularly strong demand from the hyperscale area, which benefited North America," said O'Connell.  "In particular. This comes at a time when other regions are struggling, due to price pressure driven by the appreciation of the U.S. dollar. The strength in North America was strong enough to offset declines in Latin America and Japan."

Platform for Voice and Video-A Cisco Case-Study

By upgrading to the latest version Cisco Unified CM, you will improve collaboration with easy access to rich video, voice, conferencing, and IM and presence technology that empowers people to engage and innovate -- anywhere, on any device. Cisco has upgrade options and resources to ease the transition and best fit your business needs, including cloud deployment options.

A great example of a recent upgrade by Cisco is Vistaprint. The Lexington, Massachusetts-based retail electronic service company grew by leaps and bounds between 2009 and 2012 thanks in large part to their aggressive media campaigns seen all over the world.  The growing enterprise wanted to make sure that its employees could readily collaborate with colleagues in any global office, for customer projects and business planning.

“Decisions can take a long time when you rely on email and phone conversations because you can’ see whether someone who usually speaks another language understands you, and you can’t share designs,” said Vistaprint VoIP Manager Jimmy Yan.

Vistaprint built a strong foundation for collaboration and customer care by adopting Cisco® Unified Communications and collaboration applications.

“Cisco supports our business goals because it’s at the forefront of communications and collaboration, and support is outstanding,” says Yan.

Utilizing four Cisco Unified Communications Manager clusters around the world, the solution connects the Vistaprint team via 3000 Cisco Unified IP Phones to approximately 100 workers in the company’s printing plants who use Cisco Unified Wireless IP Phones so that coworkers can reach them anywhere in the plant to report equipment issues that could affect job deadlines.

Additionally, to reduce data center costs, Vistaprint virtualized its Cisco applications and other business applications, and hosts them on a Cisco Unified Computing System™ (UCS®) C-Series Rack Servers.

“Every Cisco UCS server we deploy replaces four of our old servers, saving data center space, power, and cooling costs,” Yan says.

The company also uses Cisco Nexus® switches, Cisco Unified Wireless Network, and Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) for WAN acceleration.

Take advantage of this unmatched experience through best-of-breed applications and devices that Cisco Unified Communications solutions have to offer. You’ll be able to create video conferences and get closer to customers fast.  Learn how to scale your experts while lowering total ownership costs.

Cisco Turns 30-Consider a Firewall to Celebrate the Business Milestone

GET,LLC is proud to be a Cisco Registered Partner. Even more importantly, we are as proud to say Happy Birthday to Cisco who is celebrating their 30th Anniversary in business.

The technology of Cisco has certainly changed the way the world works lives and plays. They credit the people who built Cisco over the past three-decades. We tip our hats to them as well. What a great team to work with.   Also, they pioneered much across the networking business.  Their Advanced Gateway Services Router was Cisco's first product back in 1986.  The AGS was networking until IP came along. Cisco stayed with their routers when others jumped into their marketplace.  Cisco bet on IP-today it dominates.  Cisco also noted that the internet would change our lives-the mid 1990's they saw the future that is today.  Collaboration dominates.

So to Cisco-Happy Birthday!

What about the next 30 years?

One day at a time-starting with Cisco’s next-generation firewall (NGFW) that offers the industry’s first adaptive, threat-focused firewall solution, Cisco® ASA with FirePOWER™ Services. It delivers superior, multilayered protection, improves visibility, and reduces security costs. Achieve integrated threat defense across the entire attack continuum with the proven Cisco ASA firewall combined with the industry’s most effective next-generation IPS and advanced malware protection.

As a Cisco partner, GET, LLC will deliver a total package to help you maximize your return on investment as you move to the NGFW. We offer:
●          Migration and technical support services
●          Trade-in promotions and Cisco financing

Public Sector-"Just Switch It!"

At GET,LLC, we can say we have just a bit of public sector experience in Micronesia. Having served at both the local and federal government levels in different capacities over the past decade, GET,LLC is a credible source to assist our government friends in bringing the latest technologies to the various work forces-particularly in Information Technology (IT).

Through our partnership with Cisco, we believe we can answer a couple of important questions relative to access across the government network.

A Cisco Unified Access solution helps state and local governments (SLG) provide a higher level of service to its citizens.  Unified Access capabilities weave together services, people, agencies, and information into a single, pervasive solution using the network as the platform. Cisco is making it possible for state and local government, government agencies, and citizens to connect in ways never before imagined. With Cisco’s Unified Access solution, public sector organizations and agencies can do more with less while providing a higher level of service and offering constituents new tools and resources to enhance quality of life.  It addresses and simplifies critical SLG challenges like BYOD, Software Defined Networking (SDN) Investment Protection, Video Deployments and Security.

Cisco’s Unified Access solution provides critical benefits to state and local government:

Simplifies SLG BYOD deployments by providing converged access-The backbone of the network is critical in supporting BYOD and mobility. SLG’s  need to resolve inconsistencies between wired and wireless infrastructure in order to deliver operational simplicity, organizational agility, and better user experience. This is accomplished by the Unified Access integration of wired and wireless operational tools

Manages Mobile Device Surge: Manage Three Times More Devices on the Network-An average constituent now carries three times more devices. Internet of Things devices such as sensors, closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs), and building automation are being connected to the network. State and local governments can accommodate this surge with a highly secure, reliable wireless network consisting of Aironet 3700, 2600, and 1600 access points.

Provides SDN Investment Protection-Every government IT department is being asked to do more with less. At the same time, complexity is multiplying with more devices, more applications, and more traffic on the network. As a result, IT departments are looking at network automation and SDNs to facilitate simplicity, agility, and lower TCO.  Cisco’s Catalyst 6800 and 6500-E switches support the Cisco onePK SDN toolkit. You can easily build applications to automate operations and create services across the campus for increased simplicity.

Optimizes Security-Security is a high priority for state and local governments due to BYOD, regulatory compliance, and increased network attacks. IT directors for SLG organizations often have dedicated budgets to address security and compliance challenges. Cisco’s Unified Access solutions can help if you currently have separate, inconsistent security policies for wired, wireless, and remote access with the Cisco Identity Services Engine.

Simplifies Energy Management Across the Network to Cut IT Costs-The Cisco EnergyWise suite of software and services will significantly reduce energy costs throughout the campus or distributed office environment-some of the highest in the United States.

If you are ready to refresh your respective government agency's infrastructure to meet the current needs of BYOD, Mobility, Advanced Security, & IT simplification, give GET,LLC and let's talk about making this happen over the course of the new fiscal year.

GET, LLC is a proud Cisco Registered Partner providing the latest Cisco products and services direct to businesses and government organizations. "Just Switch It" to Next Generation Network Services

As a business owner, ask yourself if this is becoming common at your office:

Devices flooding your network.

Countless applications.

Too much complexity and not enough visibility?

GET, LLC says that it’s time to upgrade and simplify your network with smarter switches. You can address the growing number of devices and traffic in a cost-effective, secure way. Don’t wait to simplify the network so you can respond quickly.  Don't wait to secure the network with contextual policies and meet regulatory compliance requirements.  Don't wait to gain full visibility into what’s happening on your network.

Innovation in business requires innovation in the network. Upgrade your campus and branch switching and access point infrastructure. The network is more important than ever.

The Cisco Open Network Environment (ONE) is Cisco’s overarching vision to bring more openness and programability to all networks - across service providers, data centers, and enterprises. Now, you can begin making that vision a reality across campus and branch, WAN and LAN, and in both wired and wireless environments with the Cisco ONE Enterprise Networks Architecture.

The Cisco ONE Enterprise Networks Architecture transforms IT through an open and programmable platform for network services that brings networks and applications closer together. It creates a “feedback loop” between the network infrastructure and the applications running on top of it, allowing applications to access network intelligence at multiple levels and the network to be aware of the applications running on top of it. The capabilities unlock new business opportunities by enabling sophisticated connected mobile experiences (for example, advanced location-based services), diverse cloud services, and user-developed applications, allowing enterprises to respond quickly to new business opportunities with faster time to market.

Unified Communications Market = $61.9 Billion in 2018

The trend is making its move in Micronesia-an aggressive effort to cut expenses, grow productivity and increase efficiency.  The Albany, New York-based Transparency Market Research released a report recently that says that the unified communications market could grow from $22.8 billion in 2011 to $61.9 billion by 2018.

GET, LLC has confirmed that a number of the largest corporations in Micronesia are moving towards unified communications (UC)-the integration of real-time communication services such as instant messaging (chat), presence information, telephony (including IP telephony), video conferencing, data sharing (including web connected electronic whiteboards interactive whiteboards), call control and speech recognition with non-real-time communication services such as unified messaging (integrated voicemail, e-mail, SMS and fax).

UC becomes even more important in this era of increasing workforce mobility and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) practices, the analysts said.

Because of these trends, IT departments increasingly will be forced to provide cost-effective and flexible ways to communicate. Driving the adoption of UC are video, audio and Web conferencing because of their ability to link geographically dispersed organizations, according to the report.  Many of the corporations here in the Western Pacific have presence from Majuro to Manila. UC makes sense for them all.

UC comes with the promise of simplified management of collaboration technologies—from voice and video to email and instant messaging—and a better user experience for employees, partners and customers looking for better ways to work together. Like Transparency Market Research, other analyst firms also see a huge upside for the market.

While industry observers have said the UC market hasn't grown as quickly as expected over the last several years, due in part to the complexity around the technologies, such trends as a mobile work force, the growing use of video and cloud computing will help fuel interest and spending. According to Transparency Market Research, the proliferation of mobile devices capable of video communications and the growth of networks that can more easily handle video as well as voice and data will further drive UC adoption.

At the same time, there are no shortages of challenges, according to the analysts. Enterprises and service providers need to ensure the quality of the service on networks that are being asked to handle multiple services, they said. At the same time, security remains a concern. Other factors impeding adoption of UC technologies include the lack of interoperability between vendor platforms and the amount of money organizations need to spend to put a UC system in place.

GET, LLC is a proud Cisco Registered Partner providing the latest Cisco products and services direct to businesses and organizations-including unified communications. Secure Web Gateways-A Fit for Your Business?

An interesting paper was released by Gartner Inc. recently.  The world's leading information technology research and advisory company shared with GET, LLC and other Cisco Business Partners a report that stated that Malware detection and cloud services are two areas of continuing disparity among Secure Web Gateway vendors and analyzed the key differences in the capabilities and other key functions of this growing industry

The Stamford, Connecticut-based tech advisors contend that Secure Web gateways (SWGs) utilize URL filtering, malware detection and application control technology to protect organizations and enforce Internet policy compliance. SWGs are delivered as on-premises appliances (hardware and virtual) or cloud-based services.

They estimate that the combined SWG revenue of the Cloud companies in 2012 was $1.18 billion (which includes on-premises and cloud-based offerings). Revenue from solutions that lack full SWG functionality has been excluded (for example, URL filtering only or proxies sold without anti-malware protection). Gartner says the market grew approximately 15% over 2011- anticipating that the market will grow 13% to 15% in 2013.

Eight of the 13 vendors in their analysis now offer a multitenant cloud service. However, the market is still dominated by on-premises solutions (86% share, based on revenue), with SWG as a service representing the remainder of the market (14%). Gartner's market share and growth rate estimate of the broader market for SWG proxy and URL filtering software can be found in "Market Share: Security Software, Worldwide, 2012."  The market is segmented between large enterprises and small or midsize businesses (SMBs). SMB solutions are designed for ease of use, cost-effectiveness and basic security protection. Large enterprise solutions protect against more-advanced threats, including the capability to detect targeted attacks.

Vendors are increasingly integrating content-aware data loss prevention (DLP) to monitor sensitive data. Cloud services are being driven by the need to protect mobile devices and secure remote-office connections.

Barracuda Networks, Blue Coat Systems, ContentKeeper Technologies, McAfee, Phantom Technologies-iboss Security, Sangfor, Sophos, Symantec, Trend Micro, Trustware, Websense, Zscaler, and our friends at Cisco Systems make up the field in this growing market.

There are many pluses and minuses that each may offer-but one thing is for certain is that each provide a level of Malware protection and Cloud Services that must fit your respective business needs.

Gartner says that the market for SWG functionality will remain broad through at least 2016 and that "barriers to entry are low since vendors can readily license a URL database and an antivirus engine, package them with basic reporting and some application control, and market the solution as an SWG. These solutions will continue to put pricing pressure on the SMB market, but larger enterprises should avoid the temptation to go with a low-cost provider. Vendors that can demonstrate a strong track record of malware research and success in malware prevention will be the ones that succeed in the large enterprise market."

Our advice?  Ensure that you can measure these respective companies ability to execute and completeness of vision in executing a SWG that fits your needs.

Federal Workforce Numbers Poses Challenges for Contractors-Job Loss = Federal Fund Decline?

President of Allen Federal Business Partners Larry Allen wrote recently that the U.S. Government's Civil Service workforce shrunk by nearly 80,000 positions in 2013- continuing what he called, "a trend in which more people leave the government than come on board."  The Virginia-based Allen, also an consultant to Cisco Distribution Giant-Comstor, wrote in his Blog with Cisco Partners like GET, LLC, that the total federal workforce, including active duty military personnel, now stands at 4.3 million people and that the size of the workforce is expected to continue its contraction, including in the military, as activities in Afghanistan wind down.

Does this mean that the pace of job loss is expected to slow? Allen wrote:

"...This phenomena poses many challenges for companies selling to the federal government.

First, there are fewer people to sell to.  Does your firm sell hardware or services priced by the seat?  Your business may have to look harder and diversify in order to succeed.  We have already seen agencies, for example, write provisions into contracts for software that require contractors to reduce their fees in the event that fewer licenses are purchased or if some are cancelled due to workforce reductions.  This makes up-front discussions with customers all the more important so that you firm understands how to make smart pricing decisions.

Service sellers may have an easier time as the missions of government certainly aren’t going away.  Despite political rhetoric, the fact remains that citizens expect government services.  If the feds themselves aren’t providing it, contractors will have to.

No matter what you’re selling, however, budget constraints will still be a reality."

GET, LLC stands with Allen in that we all should take proactive steps to ensure our federal customers are making the best buying decisions and provide as much assistance as possible to help facilitate such. The more we all understand and share the historical knowledge and program experience with our federal customer's contracting teams, both will succeed.  Thanks Larry for the words of advice.

Carrier Wi-Fi Sales to Eclipse $8.5 Billion Over Next Five Years

The Campbell, California-based Infonetics Research recently released a Carrier Wi-Fi Equipment report.  The annual report tracks Wi-Fi equipment deployed by operators in public spaces for wireless internet access.  When you are trusted by the largest communications equipment companies, service providers, chip makers and Wall Street, almost anything you say be certain that people listen-including GET, LLC.

Infonetics Research says that over the five years from 2013 to 2017, operators will spend a cumulative $8.5 billion on Carrier Wi-Fi equipment, led by mobile operators using Carrier Wi-Fi for data offload.

“This strong growth will gain additional impetus from the proliferation of small cells with integrated Wi-Fi over the coming years," said Directing Analyst for Microwave and Carrier Wi-Fi at Infonetics Research Richard Webb.

According to the research, globally, revenue for Carrier Wi-Fi equipment, including wireless access points and Wi-Fi hotspot controllers, totaled $338 million in the first half of 2013. Carrier Wi-Fi revenue has already surpassed 2/3 of total revenue for the prior year, says Infonetics. The majority of carrier Wi-Fi access points are also Wi-Fi hotspots, notes the report.

The Infonetics report noted that North America has consistently dominated Carrier Wi-Fi revenue share since 2007.  They expect that by 2017, a regional share shift to Asia Pacific and EMEA is expected in this marketplace. As the Carrier Wi-Fi market evolves and more operators launch Carrier Wi-Fi services, Infonetics says fluctuations in vendors' market share, with the top 5 positions -- currently held by Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, Ruckus, and Alcatel-Lucent -- potentially shuffled.

Infonetics’ Carrier Wi-Fi report provides worldwide and regional market size, market share, forecasts through 2017, analysis, and trends for Wi-Fi hotspot controllers and Wi-Fi-only and dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi access points. The report includes carrier Wi-Fi vendor announcements and customer wins. Vendors tracked include Airspan, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Aruba Networks, Edgewater Wireless, Ericsson (BelAir Networks), Huawei, Motorola Solutions, NSN, Ruckus Wireless, and others.

Prices for Construction Materials Stable in November 2013

Construction material prices fell by half a percent in November 2013 according to a report by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).  In a recent DOL Producer Price Index report, the numbers are up by 1.1 percent from the same period in 2012.  The DOL report noted that non-residential construction materials prices are down 0.6 percent for the month while the Country's wholesale goods prices have jumped by 0.2 percent.  Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Chief Economist Anirban Basu told the Illinois-based Metal Construction News that November represented another month of remarkable stability for construction input prices and 2014 is not likely to offer as much stability as last year.

"Although many investors predicted significant inflation this year due to expansionary monetary policies in much of the developed world, there continues to be a lack of significant inflationary pressures both globally and nationally," said Basu. "Global economic growth is set to accelerate and the apparent budget deal in Congress should produce greater certainty among businesses, helping improve an already benign national economic forecast."

Some promising figures from the November report that GET,LLC will be keeping a close eye on:

Fabricated structural metal products were up 0.1 percent for the month and 0.3 percent year over year.
Nonferrous wire and cable prices rose 0.2 percent on a monthly basis and are down 3 percent year over year.
Iron and steel prices were up 1.8 percent for the month and are down 0.1 percent compared to the same time last year.
Steel mill products prices increased 0.8 percent in November but are down 0.6 percent compared to the same time last year.

"Bring Your Own Device", Management and Security-Insight from the CTO of The Westcon Group

Chief Technology Officer of The Weston Group William Hurley regularly provides words of perspective from the world's leading distributor of networking, communications, security, virtualization, storage, and unified computing platforms.  GET, LLC and other Cisco Business Partners utilize Westcon's services to become more successful through their distribution portfolio and  range of services.  We are happy to have him and his powerful insight into doing business.  Earlier this month, Hurley wrote about mobile device security and was enlightening on this topic:

"This week’s Economist has a short article on mobile device security. Rightfully so, they recognize the security threat is data loss as opposed to malware. As discussed in previous posts, the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) challenge is about management of devices.  Data loss prevention is most effective when it is aware the device exists and is accessing, sitting or transmitting certain information when it should not be.

We have been asked  recently about the potential growth in the BYOD space.  It won’t come from malware.  It will come from a proliferation of devices, from the common smart phone to the latest wearable, that is retaining and transmitting information the enterprise simply does not want transmitted. And please remember, data is not just spreadsheet attachments in an email,  more importantly it is video, taken innocently or not in the office, that poses data loss problems.
That is the threat of BYOD."

We will continued to follow this trend facing personal devices-powerful for productivity, but vulnerable to security risks.
