Server Revenues Hit $12 Billion

Leading industry analysts are reporting that server sales for the first quarter of 2015 hit the $12 Billion mark.   Stamford, Connecticut-based Gartner Inc has reported that server revenue grew by 17.9 percent to $13.4 billion from the same period last year. In terms of server shipments, Gartner reported server shipments of 2.7 million units for a growth rate of 13 percent.

"The first quarter of 2015 was a particularly strong start to the year, with the strongest shipment growth since the third quarter of 2010, when the market was recovering from the downturn. It was also the second largest-volume quarter ever," said Gartner Research Director Adrian O'Connell.

According to the world's leading information technology research and advisory company. x86 server shipments increased 13.2 percent and revenue increased 14.5 percent, while RISC/Itanium Unix server shipments declined 2.9 percent and revenue decreased by 3.1 percent.

HP maintained its No. 1 ranking in the worldwide server market based on revenue with 23.8 percent market share in the first quarter of 2015. Lenovo experienced the largest increase in the first quarter of 2015 with 658.2 percent growth. All of the top five global vendors had revenue increases for the first quarter of 2015-including Cisco which saw a bump in market share by 1.2 percent to 6.6 percent of the 2015 Quarter One Market Share.

"The market was driven by particularly strong demand from the hyperscale area, which benefited North America," said O'Connell.  "In particular. This comes at a time when other regions are struggling, due to price pressure driven by the appreciation of the U.S. dollar. The strength in North America was strong enough to offset declines in Latin America and Japan."
