Does Dim Lighting Help People Make Better Decisions?

The London, England-based The Independent is reporting that exposure to dim lighting can have a positive impact on people's emotions-making people more rational and able to negotiate better.

Time to make a decision to use dim lights?

A University of Toronto Scarborough and Northwestern University study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology examined the link between lighting and human emotion.  Participants in the study were asked to rate under different lighting settings the spiciness of chicken-wing sauce, how aggressive a fictional character was being, how attractive someone was and the taste of two juices.

Assistant Professor of Management at University of Toronto Scarborough Alison Jing Xu noted that  all of their reactions were intensified in bright light, a phenomena which Xu attributes to the body perceiving light as heat, which can trigger emotions.

"Bright light intensifies the initial emotional reaction we have to different kinds of stimulus including products and people," Xu said.

The researchers found that that bright light intensifies feelings so dramatically that people prone to depression “actually become more depressed” on sunny days.

The majority of everyday decisions are also made under bright light.

So turning down the light may help you make more rational decisions or even settle negotiations more easily.

"Marketers may also adjust the lightening levels in the retail environment, according to the nature of the products on sale," said Xu. "If you are selling emotional expressive products such as flowers or engagement rings it would make sense to make the store as bright as possible."

NAWIC Guam Chapter 381 Observes Women in Construction Week March 2-8, 2014

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Guam Chapter 381 will celebrate Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 2-8, 2014. NAWIC's mission is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry.

"The Guam Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction is committed to enhancing the success of all women in construction," says NAWIC Guam Chapter 381 President Bing Mejia

The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry. It is also a time for local chapters to give back to their communities. WIC Week provides an occasion for NAWIC's thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.

"While there are more than one million women employed in the construction industry, women only comprise approximately ten percent of the construction workforce.  These women, whether they are administrative specialists, general contractors, subcontractors, trades people, or professionals, are vital elements to the construction process," said immediate NAWIC Past-President Cindy Johnsen. "'Women in Construction Week' is simply a time set aside to thank those women for all their efforts toward successful construction projects.  WIC Week will also bring attention to the industry and encourage others to realize that construction is a viable, profitable career field."

Terex "I Make America" Initiative Roll Out

GET, LLC is proud to be a partner with Terex.  And while, we are unable to attend the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 Show in Las Vegas next week due to other obligations, we wanted to continue sharing with you more of the great news about the happenings at Gold Lot Booth #1047.  This blogger has focused on the new equipment that will be showcased at the annual industry show in recent weeks, and now Terex will be taking the show up a notch come March 4, 2014.

Every day, millions of hard-working American contractors put their fingerprint on America’s infrastructure. They build the roads, bridges, public transport systems and port facilities that fuel the powerful American economic engine.

In 2010, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) started the I Make America campaign, an advocacy program designed, in part, to make Congressional leaders more aware of the importance infrastructure plays in the economic strength of the United States. On a typical day, about 43 million tons of goods valued at $29 billion move on the nation’s interconnected transportation network. The lack of investment in surface transportation infrastructure has broad implications for the ability of U.S. equipment manufacturers to stay economically competitive with other countries, given today’s global marketplace.

Terex is a longstanding supporter of I Make America. To raise awareness and funds for this program, Terex will encourage team members and attendees at CONEXPO to put their fingerprint on the Terex I Make America work of art at their Booth.

“We invite all show attendees to stop by our booth in the Gold Lot and help us create this I Make America masterpiece," said Terex Chairman and  CEO Ron DeFeo,

Over 40 Terex machines will be featured in the company’s 50,000 square foot display including the Terex tapestry as part of the I Make America Project.

People can follow the progress made daily on the artwork by liking the Terex Corporation Facebook page – facebook.com/TerexCorporation.

You know, we at GET, LLC have already done that-see our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/getguam. We all should get behind the I Make America effort.

We understand that at the end of the show, Terex will hand over the infrastructure  artwork to AEM in order to further support the I Make America program. Good stuff, huh? If you are going to CONEXPO, put the Terex Booth and the top of your list of places to see there.

If you have any aerial lift needs and would like to discuss potential solutions, please drop GET, LLC a line via our website at www.get-guam.com or give us a call at 671-797-0789-your authorized Terex/Genie Representative for Guam and Micronesia.

Guam-A Different Perspective

There is a big push to redefine what should Guam's government be to the people of this important U.S. Territory.  From Yigo to Merizo, there are so many opinions on what works to bring about the systemic changes that can redefine and make this a modern island community.  As the discussion flies all across the proverbial board, I thought it was a good time to share my perspective of all of this.  I get asked all the time, when I am out and about-so I figured I would get on the one sounding board to offer my perspective. Wait.  That is what this Blog has been about from the start!!!

Back to the issue at hand.

Micronesia is an area of the world that holds so much promise.  Everywhere else in the world struggles with a loss of identity natural resources and economic diversification.  Though isolated, Guam still remains the "Big City" of Micronesia and all the islands from Majuro to Palau offer such great potential for growth.

The chiefs have struggled to see eye to eye on how a unified Micronesia can be profitable.  Their respective attentions have been focused on what is needed to keep their island's moving ahead.  Economically, most use U.S. currency.  Most rely on our collective American God Fathers to bring about increased revenues.  But, the relationship would secure our destiny-only we will do that ourselves.

I am encouraged.  I am far from discouraged.  People of have been doing business on Guam to take care of their lives and families well before our first contact with the Western world hundreds of years ago.  Whether it is education, health, economic development there is much that has been done across the region for all can achieve if they only want to.

Our school children from Ebeye to Garapan to Kolonia to Agat are seeing the value of hard work and learning.  They are also learning that the world is a big place that all that they do in fact does contribute to the discussion on growth of Micronesian.  This Blogger is a product of this resurgence.  Many late in the last century were challenging young people to get involved.  The great leaders of Micronesia saw that while they may have brought the vision to bring the region forward on the world stage, it has become abundantly clear that my generation and that of my children will be the ones to actually execute our father's generations New Micronesia.

This argument and movement around the island is hovering around one key characteristic that is missing today-drive.  If all Guamanians and others from Micronesia push to grow and become independent then we can expect unprecedented growth across all sectors.  If we choose to sit back, then we get what we get. I feel that we can achieve greatness-we got to want it.  More to come.

Dealing with Price Resistance-Our Friends at Savoy Share a Simple System to Address The Four Types of Buyers

Savoy Contract Furniture has been a great partner to GET, LLC.  They were the first company we engaged as we set out on this adventure that is a small business.  To develop further business, some words of wisdom from the Pennsylvania team that we wanted to share with you relative to buyers-without whom we would not have sales.

"There are all kinds of buyers out there, but you can break them down into four types. Follow this simple system to turn price objections into opportunities to close.

The Expert knows the price of everything - and the value of nothing.  First, have the customer reiterate what he wants most from his furniture. Then, add each feature step-by-step, matching it with the value it creates for your customer:

  • Construction - reduce maintenance costs
  • Style - attracted to a unique look.
  • Warranty - no worries, we'll take care of it - fast!
  • Service - use a personal approach

The Victim is afraid he's paying too much for everything - and that his boss is going to find out.  Take away features until he's either ready to buy, or until he starts telling you to "add them back in".  If he insists on comparing our value with the competition, subtract what your customer isn't getting from the competition, point-by-point:

  • Materials - If we used lower grade materials we could lower the price.
  • Construction - If we built it to only last 5 years we could lower the price.
  • Delivery - If we extended our lead times we could lower the price. Our price includes the features your customer probably likes most about your product.

The Flea Market Buyer believes that everything is negotiable and value is established only after he gets a better price.  Multiply the value of what you're selling by the intangibles:

  • Reputation - is everything. We stand behind our products and our customers attest to that.
  • Our Experience - years of insight is engineered into our products.
  • Quality - Many of our customers experience up to an 80% reduction in furniture maintenance costs when they install our  product.  Bargain hunters will recognize value, if you make them face the facts.

Mr. Apples and Oranges is always comparing prices between products which have no basis for comparison.  This customer breaks down benefits into smaller units, dividing by time periods.

Bottom line? The incremental cost can be translated into real value and is easier for the customer to relate to.

Guam-A Different Perspective

An interesting move is afoot to change the complexion of the race for the Governor of Guam and the Guam Legislature in this year's General Election.  While many have had their differences with the current Administration, it appears that such animosity is leading some to try to break up what has been a 40 year exercise in defining who we are as a modern American community.

Political parties stand for the shared ideologies of people.  For our island, much of the way Guam voters and politicos lined themselves for the past four decades has mirrored the major national political parties.  But in that time, in this Blogger's humble opinion, each side of the political landscapes either stifled growth of their respective Party's ideas and or pushed away supporters by pandering to opposing segments of the electorate.  That is Guam politics one friend told me. But where does that leave Guam and the election for the island's chief executive?

There are demands that the Guam economy has to be diversified or be left behind in a fast changing world.  Tourism remains the number one industry on Guam followed closely by federal defense spending in dollars injected into the economy.  This two-legged stool has been shaky as of late and finding a third leg is proving more and more challenging.  The business climate is not so great and regulations hold down what could be such great prosperity.  Too much focus is spent on helping the few private sector interests at the expense of many.  Jobs are few and far between.  Also, the delivery of education services remain challenged and under federal scrutiny.  Public safety and health concerns are diminished that social ills and crime are now littering the front pages of local newspapers.

The electorate will either keep the status quo or demand change no matter the cost.  The evolution of subversive political action groups will certainly dial back the efforts of both the Republican and Democratic Parties of Guam who struggle to keep up with their national counterparts.  Incumbents are not seeing this very clearly.  The messaging of both parties has grown stale and now overused or cliché.  They are not doing a good job in inspiring greatness of our people.  Each are using the spin to create a society dependent on government,  What happened to each person seeking their own destiny in life?  What about laws to foster individual growth and economic stimulus? Guam has grown so much, yet we have reduced our people to thinking that all that we see in front of us is this new and improved way of life.

So what can this community do to turn this attitude around? Be involved. Ask the hard questions. Demand accountability. Seek the truth and honesty about public policy.

Many will be involved.  Only a few will make this election memorable.  But all of this does not mean a thing unless you vote.  This fundamental right trumps all the story lines that will infiltrate all across this island community over the next 10 months.
